1985/86 B Grade Premiers
(Division 3)

1985/86 Summary

  • Once again under Brian Conroy's captaincy, the B Grade won the Division 3 premiership - their fourth premiership in five years - by winning their first ever grand final.
  • The batting was led by Brian Conroy with 438 runs @ 33.7, followed by his brother Bob Noble with 325 runs @ 46.4 and John Smith with 269 runs @ 24.5.
  • The bowling load was evenly spread between Geoff Bell who took 24 wickets @ 16.8, Andrew Deane with 21 wickets @ 12.4, David Hodge with 20 wickets @ 22.1 and Danny Mazurke with 19 wickets @ 18.4.
  • In the semi-final against Adelaide Cavaliers, Bob Noble at number 3 held the top order together with an aggressive 40 in 74 minutes, but when he was out at 4/62, followed shortly after by captain Brian Conroy at 5/64, we were in all sorts of trouble. At this point Bill Holst came to the crease and rescued the innings with a marvelous counter attacking knock of 65 in 95 minutes. Bill Holst had critical partnerships of 57 with David Hodge (11 in 60 minutes) and 33 with Peter Hughes to bring us back to 7/154. Peter Hughes (42* in 88 minutes) then batted with the tail to get us to a defendable total of 206 (off 61.2 overs).
Because we didn't bat the day out they had 85 overs in which to get the runs. We applied constant pressure, having them 2 for not many after 15 overs and then rotated our four pace bowlers for the duration of the innings, not letting them get away at any stage. To Adelaide Cavalier's credit, they lasted until the 71st over but our tight bowling had restricted them to just 144 runs. Best of the bowlers were Geoff Bell with 3/36 off 22 overs and Andrew Deane with 5/34 off 18.5 overs.
  • In the grand-final against Kenilworth, we all but won the match on the first day with another oustanding display of tight bowling. We bowled Keniwlorth out for 88 runs in 53 overs (conceding just 1.6 runs per over). All four of our pace bowlers had outstanding figures: Andrew Deane 18 overs 4/21, Danny Mazurke 11 overs 4/27, Geoff Bell 16 overs 1/24, David Hodge 8 overs 0/11.
After the loss of an early wicket, John Smith 32 in 150 minutes and Bob Noble 75 in 160 minutes put on a 74 run partnership to pass their total, and then Andrew Deane made 61 in 100 minutes to raise our final total to 227.

2001/02 Summary

  • The B grade won the Division 3 premiership under the captaincy of Greg Alsop. This was the club's 5th B grade premiership and its 14th premiership overall.
  • The batting was magnificently led by captain and opening batsman Greg Alsop with 667 runs @ 60.6 (including an unprecedented 3 centuries before christmas). 'Inzi' and Mick Gibbie, who made 381 runs @ 47.6, created a formidable opening combination for the team with an average opening partnership of 48.3. They were well supported by number 3 batsman Phil Davidson with 259 runs @ 37.0 and middle order batsman Dave Palmer with 225 @ 37.5.
  • The bowling attack had good depth led by John Beattie with 31 wickets @ 10.4, followed by Scott Deniet with 25 wickets @ 12.7, Mick Gibbie with 24 wickets @ 11.2, and Mick Lyne with 23 wickets @ 19.0.
  • The semi-final against Morphy Park was one of the most lop-sided finals you will ever see. We won it in one day. The opening spells of Scott Deniet and Mick Lyne had them under early pressure with some tight bowling, and then Mick Gibbie 4/24 and John Beattie 3/33 ripped through their batting line-up in just 42.1 overs for a total of 95 runs.
Greg Alsop with 73* in 82 minutes then tore their bowling attack to shreds and in partnership with Mick Gibbie (20*) we got the runs in 23 overs without losing a wicket. Game Over!
  • In the grand-final against Southern, our batting was magnificently led by Mick Gibbie who batted 10 minutes shy of the whole day for 119 runs in 274 minutes. Steady contributions at the other end meant Mick was able to have partnerships of 48 with Greg Alsop, 54 with Phil Davidson, 38 with Peter Hughes and 29 with Dave Palmer, to have us in a strong position at 4/169. A mini collapse from the lower order saw us at 7/195, but Mick's continuing presence at the crease and a late cameo from Richie Dey (24 in 45 minutes) got us to a strong total of 246.
The next day Scott Deniet (1/15 off 12 overs) and Mick Lyne (2/17 off 10 overs) choked their upper order and then John Beattie (3/27 of 14 overs) and Richie Dey (2/11 off 7 overs) decimated their middle and lower order to reduce them to about 9/60. Despite a bit of late slogging by their tail, the last few overs were still very enjoyable as we savoured our impending victory, and they eventually holed out to finish with a total of 101.

2002/03 Summary

  • Under new captain Mick Gibbie's leadership, the B grade became only the 8th B grade team in Adelaide & Suburban history to win the Division 2 premiership. It also gave the B grade back to back premierships and the club it's 15th premiership overall.
  • The batting was led by captain and opening batsman Mick Gibbie who batted for nearly 23 hours during the season and made 576 runs @ 52.4. He was well supported by floating batsman Phil Davidson with 309 runs @ 38.6, number 3 batsman Peter Hughes with 281 runs @ 21.6, and lower order batsman Matthew Barton with 253 runs @ 36.1.
  • The bowling attack was led by opening bowler Joel Wilkin with 38 wickets @ 13.5, off-spinner Mick Gibbie with 27 wickets @ 21.6, Scott Williams with 24 wickets @ 12.8, and Simon Brammy with 18 wickets @ 16.1.
  • The semi-final against Keswick was a hard fought slog where we batted first and scrapped our way to 187 off 74.4 overs. Peter Hughes' 26 in 111 minutes from number 3 provided the resilience needed at the top of the order, while Matthew Barton's 47 in 141 minutes at number 6 rescued us from a perilous 6/96 through partnerships of 50 with Paul Temby (22 in 66 minutes) and 29 with Joel Wilkin (21 in 53 minutes), to get the total to 187 (and we would need every one them).
The following day was an intense and stressful day as we had Keswick 4/20 and then 6/75 but they refused to give in and got all the way to 177 before Scott Williams knocked over their number 11 batsman (who trudged off in despair at not being able to see off the last ball of the over, knowing their batsman down the other end could quite possibly get the runs the very next over). Joel Wilkin was the star of the day taking 6/35 off 24 overs. Joel built the pressure on their batsmen by conceding either no runs or a single run in 16 of his 24 overs, and reaped the rewards with 6 wickets.
  • In the grand-final against Panorama, we batted first and Mick Gibbie (35 runs in 110 minutes) and Trevor Chappell Dom Gibbie (32 runs in 164 minutes) set the foundation with a sold opening partnership of 54. This was backed up by a 5th wicket partnership of 65 between Phil Davidson (55 runs in 124 minutes) and Matthew Barton (36 runs in 72 minutes) which guaranteed us a competitive total. When number 10 batsman Simon Brammy applied the gravy with 21* we finished with a very handy total of 221.
The next day started with Panorama nice and relaxed (and cocky) chasing ONLY 221. This changed three balls into the day's play when Simon Brammy got his first wicket, and with two more in his first spell, along with two from Scott Williams, we had them 5/81 at drinks. Scott Williams finished with 4/24 off 12 overs, Simon Brammy finished with 3/63 and we bowled them out for 173.

2016/17 Summary

  • After being minor premiers in division 4 for the previous 2 seasons, but missing out on the ultimate prize, the B grade finally won the premiership this season in division 5 under captain Richie Dey. This was an outstanding achievement considering we were without our top run scorer and top wicket taker during the finals, and we had only won 1 of our last 7 games leading into the finals series.
  • The mainstay of the batting line-up was Paul Temby, who made 428 runs @ 71.3 in just 7 games, before he was lost to the A grade. Ash Marshall also contributed consistently throughout the season with 260 runs @ 32.5.
  • The bowling was led by Ash Marshall with 33 wickets @ 13.9, followed by Braedon Tonkin who had a breakout season with 20 wickets @ 16.2, including 6/26 during the finals series.
  • In the semi-final against Belair we lost the toss and fielded first, and although we had only taken one wicket at the first drinks break, we had restricted them to only 2 runs an over through our pressure. Shortly after drinks our pressure was rewarded with 3/0, and we had them 4/48. Bill Hansberry was the main instigator of their collapse, taking 4/16 in his middle 6 overs. After 43 overs they had recovered to be 6/105 and were starting to look dangerous with a partnership building, until Braedon Tonkin with 3/12 broke the partnership and cleaned up the tail - to have them all out for 111.
In reply, after losing a couple of early wickets to be 2/11, a steadying partnership between Christian Brooker & night-watchman Mark Burrows took us to 3/59, with Brooker continuing on until 4/86 when he was dismissed for 49. After a couple of quick wickets had our nerves jangling at 6/92, Dale Brusnahan hit the winning runs with 16 overs remaining.
  • In the grand-final against Mitchell Park we won the toss and batted, and on the big and slow Mitchell Park Reserve, runs were hard to come by. Although we got off to a reasonable start with a 29 opening partnership, it was followed by partnerships of 8, 14, 0, 23, 5 & 3 to leave us at 7/82 - with the main contributors being Dave Palmer (20 in 45 minutes) and Christian Brooker (28 in 102 minutes). Dale Brusnahan (31* in 58 minutes) anchored the lower order recovery by sharing an 8th wicket partnership of 33 with Gary Wilson and a last wicket partnership of 29 crucial runs with Braedon Tonkin, to get us to a competitive total of 151 in the last over.
The next day in the field was an arm wrestle. We didn’t take our first wicket until the 11th over, and when they scored 17 runs off Bill Hansberry’s first over, to be 1/43 off 12 overs, things were looking ominous. But we never stopped believing and continued to play hard attritional cricket - if they were going to beat us, we were going to make them earn it. Our resilience was best exemplified by Bill Hansberry (0/31 off 15 overs) coming back from his 17 run first over to only concede 14 runs off his remaining 14 overs. The game started to turn in our favour when Braedon Tonkin (3/14 off 15 overs) bowled their aggressive batsman in the over before drinks, and then followed it up in his next over with the wicket of their gun batsman, folowed by their other established batsman four overs later, to put them on 4/58 off 25 overs. As Braedon and Bill continued to bowl maiden after maiden, the building pressure resulted in two run outs – including a brilliant direct hit by Dale Brusnahan. They were now 6/68 off 39 overs, and still needing another 83 runs in 21 overs. From here Christian Brooker (4/26) & Dale Brusnahan closed out the innings by bowling the last 19 overs between them, and we bowled Mitchell Park out for 120 in the last over of the day.

2019/20 Summary

  • Under the captaincy of Troy Spanton and despite a round 3 loss to Southern Warriors, Warradale ascended to the top of the ladder after defeating Kenilworth in round 6 - and they stayed there for the rest of the season.
The pivotal win in securing the minor premiership was against second side, Southern Warriors in round 10. This victory left Warradale 2 games plus percentage clear on top of the ladder with 4 games remaining.
Little did we know at the time just how important it was to be minor premiers, as during the week between the last minor round game and the first final, the COVID-19 shit really hit the fan, and the finals series was cancelled with all minor premiers being declared premiers.
  • The batting was led by Vice-Captain Andrew Belsak with 378 runs @ 34.4, Mark Williams with 372 @ 53.1 in just 9 games (including his first & second centuries for the club), and Captain Troy Spanton with 349 runs @ 31.7.
  • In a well balanced and deep bowling attack, 6 players took 10 wickets or more, led by Ron Scott with 18 wickets @ 20.4, followed by Ash Marshall, Angelo Pansini & Steve Mason with 13 wickets each.

2022/23 Summary

  • Under the captaincy of Andrew Conley, Warradale were on top of the ladder for most of the season, and won the section 10 premiership with the club's oldest ever side (avergae age of 55.5 years old). The only 2 losses the team had were in 40 over one-day games where injury and unavailability meant we only had 3 recognised bowlers, and we had to find 16 overs from the non-bowlers.
Once again winning the minor premiership turned out to be crucial as most of the 2nd day of the Grand Final was washed out, causing the the match to be drawn, and Warradale were declared premiers as the higher ranked side.
In addition to winning the premiership, the club also won all 4 individual association awards for section 10 -- Noel Browne (batting), Joel Wilkin (bowling), Grant Craigie (keeping), Tim White (fielding).
  • The Batting was led by the opening pair in Noel Browne with 426 runs @ 38.7 and Andrew Conley with 311 @ 31.1, followed by Dave Palmer at No.4 or No.5, with 265 runs @ 53.0. Due to the captain's preference for bowling first and the fact that we were in the bottom division where the opposition batting usually lacked depth, we had a habit of rolling sides cheaply, chasing down a small total, and then hitting the piss, which meant opportunities for batsmen in the lower order were few and far between.
  • When everyone was available our bowling attack had good depth, with five bowlings taking 14 wickets or more. Leading wicket takers were Anthony 'Joel' Wilkin with 24 wickets @ 12.2, Anthony 'Nav' Martin with 19 wickets @ 7.7, Ash Marshall with 16 wickets @ 15.2, Brett Bryson with 16 wickets @ 15.7, and Noel Browne with 14 wickets @ 22.8.
  • In the semi-final against Morphy Parks, we won the toss and sent them in due to the fact that one of their two gun batsmen was only playing on the second day. On a very slow Mawson oval, Nav, Ash & Joel bowled very tightly, restricting them to not much more than 1 an over, but we weren't taking any wickets. Bryson came on, bowled a loopy full toss, and their run starved opener tried to hit it out of the ground and got bowled. He then also took our second wicket but was giving up 7 runs an over, so a change had to be made.
They had one good batsman who batted most of the day and who took full toll of any bad balls that we bowled, we started to drop catches and our morale started to wane.
Nav Martin made the break through (and also nearly broke through our keeper's sun-glasses when he kicked the stump in celebration). More wickets from Nav, tight bowling from Ash Marshall and Joel Wilkin, and exceptional fielding from Dave Palmer kept them in check, and we restricted them to 160 in their 60 overs (with 92 coming from their one batsman). If offerred that total at the start of the day we would have taken it, but they had the runs on the board and it was a slow ground.
Our run chase was very spluttery, the bowling wasn't exceptional, but one by one we managed to get ourselves out with soft dismissals. At 5-75 we were at the crossroads, half our wickets lost, and just over half the runs still to get. Fortunately, Dave Palmer (66no) and Dom Gibbie (22) steadied the ship with a 68 run partnership, which got us most of the way home. Dave Palmer batted 2 hours for his 66 not out, started conservatively with 12 consecutive singles, and then finished with a flurry of boundaries to seal the deal.
  • In the Grand Final, Andrew Conley's magical tossing abilities came to the fore again as we won the toss and batted. We got off to a flier, not losing a wicket in the first session and scoring at 4 runs an over. Andrew Conley 25, and Noel Browne 32, had us cruising at 0-65, however we collapsed to 3-67, and then 4-81, and then 5-104. Once again a stoic 38 run partnership between Dave Palmer (42 in 100 minutes) and Dom Gibbie (8 in 50 minutes) got us to 6-142, and then Grant Craigie (18 not out) batted with the tail to ensure we batted out our overs to finish with 8-174. On a slow Mawson Oval, and with the prospect of rain slowing it down even more that was a very competitive total (especially against a side who had been bowled out for 107 in their semi-final).
The following day, with the threat of rain hanging in the air, Ash Marshall in particular strangled their batting by conceding just 5 runs off his 8 overs. The only concern was that we weren't taking wickets, but then a run-out by Shoe/Joel off the last ball before drinks had them 1-28 off 15 overs, and sent our spirits soaring.
As it turned out, as we walked off for drinks, the rain started and we never got back on the field. A little dissapointeing because, although it meant we had won the premiership, we didn't get to experience that moment when the final wicket fell and the premiership had been won - it was more of a gradual realisation.
