1984/85 Summary

  • In the first season under a final four system, captain Bill Burnett led the A grade to our first grand final win and our third A grade premiership in four years.
  • Bill Burnett led the batting with 434 runs @ 36.2 (including two centuries) in the middle order and was well supported by Peter Steer with 376 runs @ 31.3 at the top of the order and Peter Coombe with 306 runs @ 51.0 in the lower order.
  • Frank Papagallo led the bowling attack with 34 wickets @ 13.8, and was well supported by Scott Williams with 25 wickets @ 18.1 and Peter Coombe with 21 wickets @ 17.4 (including a haul of 7/53).
  • In the semi-final against Karana, we were rescued from a perilous 5/30 start by a 115 run partnership between Bill Burnett (110 in 230 minutes) and Peter Coombe (45 in 145 minutes) to take us to 6/145. Still in a vulnerable position, Bill Burnett continued to bat with the tail, making 48 of the last 63 runs and getting us to 208 when he was the last man out with only 3 overs left.
The next day after being 0/13 off 7 overs, Karana folded to be all out for 49 off 22.2 overs, after Frank Papagallo with 6/20 off 11 overs and Scott Williams with 3/28 off 11 overs routed their batting line-up.
  • In the grand-final, Westminster got off to a good start at 0/55 but Peter Coombe turned it around with 3 quick wickets and finished with 7/53 off 26.1 overs to keep Westminster's score to a challenging 172.
In reply we were under pressure at 3/52 with Peter Steer (23 in 78 minutes) providing early stability at the top of the order. Trevor Parham (82* in 217 minutes) and Rob Edwards (41 in 127 minutes) then combined for a 4th wicket partnership of 103 runs to get us to 4/155 and in sight of victory.

1990/91 Summary

  • The A grade, led by Bill Burnett won our first Division 1 premiership, winning 10 (& drawing 1) of 13 matches.
  • Bill Burnett led the batting line-up with 374 runs @ 37.4 and was well supported by John Williams with 307 runs @ 51.2 and late arrival Rick Mitchell with 275 runs @ 55.0 in just 5 matches.
  • John Williams led the bowling attack with 28 wickets @ 14.8, followed by Shane Rusby with 21 wickets @ 11.9.
  • Tony Forster had an outstanding season behind the stumps with 27 dismissals (16 catches & 11 stumpings).
  • In the semi-final, Coromandel won the toss and surprisingly sent us in. Rick Mitchell got us off to a flying start by making 27 runs in the first 4 overs, but got out at 1/27, having made all of the runs in the opening stand. Trevor Parham (27 in 98 minutes) and Mark Thiele (22 in 75 minutes) then batted steadily to take us to 1/79, before we lost 3 quick wickets to slump to 4/79. Bill Burnett (52 in 203 minutes) and John Williams (76 in 123 minutes) then combined in a 110 run 5th wicket partnership to get us out of trouble. They complemented each other perfectly as Puggy aggressively ripped apart their bowling attack (making 76 of the 110 partnership) while Bill settled in to make sure he was there at the end of the day. We finished with 9/262 from our 75 overs.
The next day Shane Rusby (2/30 off 14 overs) and John Williams (1/33 off 14 overs) got the early breakthroughs we needed and then Peter Coombe mesmerised Coromandel's middle order with 5/47 off 17 overs to ensure a comfortable victory, all out 168.
  • In the grand-final we had Plympton Footballers (who won the toss and batted) in early trouble at 3/33 off 18 overs thanks to Shane Rusby's three early wickets (he finished with 3/15 off 11 overs). They recovered to be 5/102 before Peter Coombe (3/24 off 5 overs) and Rick Mitchell (3/24 off 8.3 overs) amazingly cleaned up their last 5 wickets in under 4 overs. All out for 106 in 39.3 overs!
This meant we had 107 overs to make 107 runs for victory but Rick Mitchell certainly wasn't planning on taking this long when he hit the second ball of the innings for six. At 0/15 after a couple of overs things were looking pretty good, but all our momentum evaporated when we lost 3 quick wickets to be 3/16. Mark Williams (27 in 110 minutes) and Bill Burnett (16 in 107 minutes) then toughed it out in 25 overs of hard attritional cricket to get us to 3/61 in sight of stumps on the first day. Unfortunately we lost 2 wickets in the second last over, leaving our nerves jangling at 5/64 overnight. The next day provided some nervous moments (especially as Hedge got dropped four times) but eventually John Williams (24* in 72 minutes) and John Hedger (26* in 70 minutes) steered us home with a 51 run partnership to give us a 5 wicket victory and our FIRST DIVISION 1 PREMIERSHIP!

1991/92 Summary

  • The A grade completely dominated the competition and went through the season undefeated to win their 2nd Division 1 premiership in a row under the leadership of Bill Burnett.
  • The batting was led by number 4 batsman John Hedger with 512 runs @ 51.2 (including 2 centuries), followed by opening batsmen Mick Gibbie (377 @ 31.4) and Rick Mitchell (365 @ 28.1).
  • The bowling attack dominated opposition batting line-ups and conceded 200 runs just once during the season. The leading wicket takers were Noel Browne with 34 wickets @ 15.0 (including three 5 wicket hauls) and John Williams with 30 wickets @ 10.6, and other members of the attack included Shane Rusby, Rick Mitchell and Joel Wilkin.
  • Tony Forster had an amazing season behind the stumps by completing 34 dismissals(17 catches and 17 stumpings).
  • In the semi-final against North Haven we won the toss, batted first and got off to a steady start thanks mainly to Rick Mitchell's 26 in 47 minutes. When Rick was dismissed at 2/40 in walked John Hedger and he proceeded to dominate the innings. Hedge made 105 in 215 minutes and was finally dismissed at 7/199. Whilst at the crease Hedge had scored two-thirds of our runs and had partnerships of 40, 40, 35 & 44 with John Williams, Bill Burnett, Andrew Conley and Tony Forster respectively. We finished with a respectable total of 225 in 72.2 overs and with our bowling attack we were in the box seat.
The next day our bowling completely suffocated them, with Rick Mitchell and John Williams only conceding 15 runs in their first 14 overs. Then Anthony Wilkin and Shane Rusby continued the treatment and at 5/45 off 31 overs they were GONE. John Williams finished with 3/10 off 10 overs, Anthony Wilkin 3/25 off 12 overs, Shane Rusby 1/17 off 10 overs and Andrew Conley chipped in with 3/30 off 8.4 overs. Tony Forster had a great day behind the stumps with 5 catches and 2 stumpings, and North Haven were bowled out for 145 off 60.4 overs.
  • In the grand-final Coromandel won the toss, batted first and got off to a great start with an 88 run opening partnership before Shane Rusby finally broke through. After a fiery spell from Rick Mitchell which yielded 2 wickets, we had fought back to have them 5/113, and then 7/144 when Russer got one of their key batsmen out. Coromandel ground their way to 7/181 and could have inflicted some late damage in the dying overs but for Anthony Wilkin cleaning up the tail with 3/0, but they still finished with a competitive total of 184 in 74.2 overs.
The next day we got off to a magnificent start with a 109 run opening stand between Rick Mitchell (77 in 125 minutes) and Mick Gibbie (29 in 135 minutes). After this start we only needed a further 76 runs to win, with 9 wickets in hand. However we lost a steady stream of wickets, and after partnerships of 7,19,7,1,9 we were 6/152 and still needing 33 runs for victory. Andrew Conley and Tony Forster combined for a 22 run partnership, and when Fors got out we still needed 11 to win. Two quick wickets later we were 9 wickets down and still needing 5 to win (or 4 to tie). Number 11 batsman Shane Rusby had to keep out 6 deliveries while Andrew 'Winner' Conley (who had pulled a hammy and was batting with a runner) expertly farmed the strike and eventually hit the winning runs. 'Winner' finished with 25* in 110 minutes and had scored 11 of our last 12 runs.

1992/93 Summary

  • With Bill Burnett again as captain the A grade won the premiership and became only the fourth club in the Adelaide and Suburban Cricket Association's history (after Hawthorn in 1940, South United in 1912 and Bowden in 1902) to win three Division 1 premierships in a row.
  • Openers Mick Gibbie with 274 runs @ 22.8, and Anton Gutsche with 264 runs @ 26.4 led the batting, followed by number 5 batsman Bill Burnett with 214 runs @ 21.4.
  • The bowling was led by Peter Coombe with 24 wickets @ 15.8, Shane Rusby with 23 wickets @ 13.7 (including a best of 7/25) and Joel Wilkin with 22 wickets @ 17.0.
  • Coming in to the last minor round match we had to win against second placed Coro Ramblers to make the finals. We knocked them over cheaply for 115, but in reply we were in big trouble at 5/40 until Tony Forster (66* in 115 minutes) and Peter Coombe (18* in 90 minutes) combined for an undefeated 84 run partnership to get us into the finals.
  • In the semi-final we played Plympton Footballers who were the undefeated minor premiers. We lost the toss and fielded, and despite Shane Rusby's 3/44 off 17.5 overs and Peter Coombe's 3/50 off 20 overs, Plympton were able to post a very challenging total of 202 runs.
The next day did not start well with Mick Gibbie getting sconed in the first over, and with John Frankcom out cheaply we were 1/8 off 9 overs. But then Mick Gibbie (71 runs in 188 minutes) and Anton Gutsche (88* in 227 minutes) put on one of the great Warradale partnerships of 140 in 158 minutes for the second wicket and we were well on our way to victory. They made the chase look a lot easier than it was, and we got the runs with 7 wickets and 7 overs in reserve.
NOTE: Three seasons earlier in 1989/90 we had finished minor premiers but were denied a place in our first division 1 grand-final when we were defeated by fourth placed Plympton in the semi-final. With the roles reversed here, it added an extra bit of satisfaction to our victory.
  • In the grand-final against ANZ Bank, Mick Gibbie (48 runs in 127 minutes) and John Frankcom (31 runs in 98 minutes) got us off to a good start with a 68 run opening partnership, but from there we lost wickets steadily all day and were bowled out for 168 in just 62 overs. Unfortunately this left ANZ 85 overs to make 163 runs, less than 2 runs an over.
As ANZ had made 264 against us just 3 matches earlier, we looked to be up against it. However, they still had to get the runs under the pressure of a grand-final. ANZ had moved steadily to 2/68, before Peter Coombe changed the course of the match by taking 3 for 0. Hectorville recovered to be 5/99, but the immense pressure we applied with our tight bowling eventually got to them. Their two established batsmen got out to skied catches (7/99) and then the next two batsmen were run out (9/115). Coombey finished with 4/39 off 22.2 overs and Shane Rusby had the exceptional figures of 2/27 off 23 overs. We bowled them out for 131 in 75.2 overs, an incredible effort. THREE IN A ROW!

1993/94 Summary

  • After scraping into the finals with a last round outright win against Adelaide Cavaliers, the A grade achieved what no other club had ever done in the association's 94 year history by winning FOUR Division 1 premierships in a row.
  • Mick Gibbie led the batting with 373 runs @ 26.6, followed by Rick Mitchell with 301 runs @ 27.4 and Anton Gutsche with 296 runs @ 26.9.
  • After having a year off, the bowling was led by John Williams with 26 wickets @ 15.9, followed by leg-spinner Andrew Conley with 22 wickets @ 10.1 and Mick Barnett with 20 wickets @ 13.9.
  • Coming in to the last minor round match against bottom side Adelaide Cavaliers, in order for us to make the finals we either had to win outright (unlikely, since there hadn't been any outright results in division 1 in the last 4 years), or have a big percentage boosting win and hope the results of several other matches went our way (also unlikely). We won the toss, sent Adelaide Cavaliers in, and knocked them over for 156 in 52.5 overs. Rick Mitchell then smashed his way to 118* in 98 minutes, and we declared at 3-182 off 23.3 overs. This left us with a 26 run first innings lead and about 45 overs of play in which to bowl them out and make any surplus runs. In an inspired effort we managed to knock them over for 63 in 35.2 overs (Andrew Conley 3/4 off 6 overs, John Williams 3/25 off 9.2 overs, Shane Rusby 2/13 off 7 overs), and we made the extra runs easily with time to spare. Finals, here we come!
  • In the semi-final against Plympton Footballers, thanks to John Williams' 3/14 off 10 overs, Shane Rusby's 3/25 off 16 overs and Rick Mitchell's 2/13 off 9 overs (and a run out) we were able to keep Plympton under pressure all day and eventually bowled them out for 140 off 64 overs.
In reply we were 1/21 overnight and whilst John Frankcom's 35 in 87 minutes at number 3 held the top order together, we lost wickets at regular intervals to be 5/91 and under a little pressure. Fortunately a cool and calm John Williams (44* in 109 minutes) and Andrew Conley (16* in 72 minutes) combined for an unbeaten 54 run partnership to get us over the line with 5 wickets in hand and more than 25 overs to spare.
  • In the grand-final against Hectorville, with some tight bowling and couple of great catches from Mick Gibbie and Rick Mitchell we had them 7/105 just before tea. After tea we dropped a couple of catches and they recovered to 7/150, but thanks to a brilliant run-out by John Williams we bowled them out for 162 in the 68th over. Shane Rusby finished with 3/14, Andrew Conley with 2/37 and the tightness of our bowling was exemplified by Rick Mitchell's 1/16 off 13 overs and Mick Barnett's 1/10 off 9 overs.
After surviving a nervous 7 overs to be 0/21 overnight (thanks to 2 dropped catches), Mick Gibbie (38 runs in 75 minutes) and Rick Mitchell (39 runs in 86 minutes) took the attack to Hectorville with a 75 run opening stand in just 17 overs. We then suffered a mini-collapse to be 3/95, but Anton Gutsche (27 in 44 minutes) and captain Bill Burnett (30* in 76 minutes) steered us home with 5 wickets and 40 overs to spare. FOUR IN A ROW!

  • The batting was led by number 3 batsman Wes Lipsett with 395 runs @ 32.9, backed up by captain Brent Harper with 362 runs @ 30.2, and opening batsman Kristian Schultz with 355 runs @ 29.6.
  • The bowling attack was led by Brent Harper with 31 wickets @ 10.2, Ash Marshall with 23 wickets @ 14.0, and Trinity McNamara with 20 wickets @ 10.0.
  • In the semi-final against Belair an even all-round bowling performance saw us bowl them out for 125 off 47.3 overs. The best bowling figures went to Brendan Sidon with 2/9 off 9 overs, Ash Marshall 2/21 off 8 overs, and Derek Lightfoot chipped in with 2/6 off 15 balls at the end.
We made hard work of reaching this total with only Wes Lipsett at number 3 batting for more than an hour. Wes anchored the innings, making 58 in 172 minutes, and he had partnerships of 24 with Kristian Schultz, 38 with Derek Lightfoot, 22 with Trinity McNamara, and 19 with Richie Dey, but chose a bad time to get out when he became the 9th wicket to fall when we still needed 1 run to win. Although a tie would have been enough for us to progress to the Grand Final, did the books balance ?
  • In the grand-final against Keswick, we batted first but got off to a very shaky start at 3/18 and then 4/33. As seems to be a common theme throughout Warradale's finals history, we were rescued by a huge partnership. This time it was a 160 run 5th wicket partnership between Brent Harper (96 in 120 minutes) and Wes Lipsett (69 in 189 minutes). That knocked the stuffing out of Keswick and then Brendon Sidon (45* in 31 minutes) and Nick Russell (26* in 22 minutes) finished them off with an unbeaten 60 run partnership, to give us a total of 270 in 60 overs. Good luck in chasing that in a GF, Keswick!
As it turned out they never got the opportunity as it rained all night and all day Sunday and we won the premiership because we were the higher ranked team at the end of the minor round (by virtue of an outright win against South Road in round 11). This outcome was a nice little payback for Keswick whom we had on the ropes in the semi-final 2 years earlier, but were denied the opportunity for victory by the heat rule.

2016/17 Summary

  • After the association revamped the competition into 9 divisions of 8 sides (so each team could play each other twice), the A grade were demoted down to division 3 for the first time in 34 years, and under new captain, Josh Deniet, promptly responded by winning the division 3 premiership. Not only did they win the premiership, but members of the team also won the association's division 3 batting (Anton Balym), bowling (Josh Deniet), keeping (Anton Balym) & fielding (Jack Cornelissen) trophies.
  • The batting was dominated by the first three batsmen in the order, with opener Anton Balym making 584 runs @ 53.1, no.3 Nick Boden making 430 runs @ 39.1, and opener Haimish Ferguson making 413 runs @ 34.4.
  • In a superb captain's performance, Josh Deniet led the bowling attack with 48 wickets @ 6.5 as an opening bowler, and he was well supported by leg-spinner Justin Frost's 20 wickets @ 15.6, along with a well balanced attack containing Lachy Ferguson, Jack Cornelissen, Rowan Williams & Scott Monaghan.
  • In the semi-final against North Haven, we won the toss and got off to a reasonable start to be 2/46 in the 11th over. Nick Boden at no.3 provided the backbone of the innings, and his 73 in just over two hours at the crease, had us in good shape at 4/143. However, his dismissal at 5/153 led to a late order collapse, and we were bowled out for 181 in the 49th over.
Unfortunately this left North Haven 69 overs to make just 182 runs on a lightning quick Marymount Oval. On the flip side, we had 9 overs late on day one in which to make some early inroads and hopefully put the wind up them for their 2nd day run chase. Well that's exactly what we did, taking 3 wickets that night and giving their remaining batsmen a very uncomforable nights sleep. The next day they folded under the pressure, losing their remaining 7 wickets in just 23 overs, to be bowled out for 57. Opener Josh Deniet absolutely suffocated their batsmen with 4 for 5 off 13 overs, and Justin Frost was the main beneficiary of the built up pressure taking 3 for 27 off 6 overs of leg-spin.
  • In the grand-final against Hamilton, we lost the toss and were sent into the field. Led by Josh Deniet's inspirational 26 overs, 15 maidens, 7 for 26 (including 4 bowled, 1 lbw and 1 caught & bowled) - Warradale's best ever bowling figures in a final - we put them under immense pressure for the entire day. We didn't let up, and they just could not get their innings going. We eventually bowled them out for just 142 runs in the last over of the day, on a very quick Marymount Oval, however we were up against a team who had bowled their opposition out for 33 in their semi-final.
The next day Haimish Ferguson (46 in 41 minutes) and Anton Balym (65* in 120 minutes) belted them out of the game by putting on an opening stand of 70 runs in just 41 minutes. Anton & Nick Boden then put on an unbeaten stand of 75 in 78 minutes, and we coasted to victory with 9 wickets and 28 overs in hand.
